It all began more than 25 years ago, in 1988, when The Drummer, who had been drunkenly insisting to the The Guitar Player that they should start a band, informed said player that a rehearsal studio was booked. Friends and friends of friends were called. Upon arrival at the studio, The Singer wrote a song about following The Drummer along the freeway as he did not know the way. The band's most popular song was born. Very soon, The Other Guitar Player was told by another band that he was roadie for that his band was required as support act for a gig In Barooga NSW. A name was needed. The Dead Orbisons waited nervously in a motel on a hot December day listening as dozens of motorcycles made their way to the party at a secluded farmhouse in the middle of endless plains. The gig was hosted by a well known club for gentleman who favoured Harley Davidsons and jackets with the club name emblazoned on their backs. As an electrical storm danced on the horizon, the band played their first gig to hundreds of raucous bikers. They finished as dawn came and packed for the long journey home knowing they must keep doing this.
Soon members left, new ones were found and their name changed to Brainstorm, from a song by English Spacerock band, Hawkwind, whose songs rapidly became half of their set, along with other obscure covers and their burgeoning originals. Gigs were found, dues were paid, although it was rapidly apparent that this would be a band situated somewhere south of the underground on the totem of the Melbourne music scene. This worried them not. As outsiders, all were used to their place in the world, none were star struck or callow and, although they knew life to be difficult, they knew there were others like them out there somewhere. They just had to find them (and convince them to come to a gig on a Tuesday night). The lineup settled around 1994 and the band focused on writing original material, recording and releasing it it themselves and playing to a few select gigs for mainly family and friends. They became backyard specialists, playing at birthdays, BBQs and housewarming parties all over town. They did a run of New Years Eve parties at a share house the Keyboard Player had lived in where they neighbours were warned, invited and welcomed. Brainstorm have played at the weddings of several friends and at a celebration of the rebirth of a house lost in the Kinglake fires. In December 2013, they played a special 25th Anniversary gig inviting past members, old friends and acquaintances to celebrate the spirit of indefatigable passion that they have for music.
We don't care if we are not successful or famous or even professional, we only care that we can get together every couple of weeks, talk about sport, eat fish and chips and write and play our music, our way. The band is a men's shed for ageing rockers who love each other's company and who have learned to respect the common love of music and the personal differences that make life fun and meaningful. Brainstorm is a success for it has given meaning and enjoyment to the lives of its members, their partners, children and extended families and friends. And sometimes we hear from outsiders in Siberia or Finland, or Mexico who connect with us though the Internet and give us impetus to carry on and make music.
These are songs have not been performed live or available as recordings for over 20 years, and we are very keen to make them available again to those who may enjoy and/or remember them. Remastering has proved to be challenging and is a work in progress; however we're determined to make these songs available with the best possible audio quality achievable. More than just a "blast from the past", they represent material written and recorded during the very earliest days of the band, a period during which many of the themes and styles were begun which were later developed in more detail.
